Monforte d’Alba

In an enchanting hilltop location, Monforte is known for the colorful houses all huddled on the slopes of a steep hill. The current patrician house, owned by the Marquis Scarampi of Cairo, was built on old castle walls. Besides this noble villa the town also boasts a Romanesque bell tower from the thirteenth century, the Brotherhoods of Umiliate and St. Augustine from the fifteenth century, and the parish church in the Piemontese '900 Gothic-style.  The nearby suburb of S. Stefano is home to the valuable Romanesque apse built in 1100.
